A Monday Bunch of Five

Five tracks to kickstart the week…..

The Lousy Pop Group – Simple Pleasures

It’s so hard not to mention Sarah Records when a new The Lousy Pop Group song shows up, as the music of these Indonesian retro indiepoppers sounds like it could have been made 30 odd years ago or more in England’s South West. New single Simple Pleasures is no exception to that rule, and I must start banning the “S” word soon. But it’s so hard when their music evokes so many memories of that era and then impact it had on me at the time. It’s out now via Shiny Happy Records.

Paradise Blossom – Forever, With You

Forever, With You is dreamy stuff, with the song resonating to the sound of imaginative and luscious sounding jangle pop. Fresno’s Paradise Blossom cannot take a step wrong at present and given the quality here, and on their previous releases, I am sure that they will not come unstuck any time soon.

Vacations – Next Exit

We have not heard from Australians Vacations for a couple of years now, but they are back with a terrific new single in the shape of Next Exit. The band write the song “takes on the idea of being stuck in a loop of repetitive behaviour” and “feeling stagnant and unsure of the future ahead” which can be applicable in a variety of scenarios whether in a relationship at either a romantic or friendship level. The only repetitive behaviour I am having is pressing the play button.

Airhockey – Always Late

Frantic, noisy and distorted. And that’s just the first three words have come into my head in order to describe Airhockey’s new single, Always Late. There are nice basslines and synths as the song constantly rotates whilst the words are repeated. The scratchy vocal style adds to the charm.

Bridge Dog – Counterweight

Oh, this is a most welcome return from Sydney’s Bridge Dog. Fuzzy, female fronted indiepop that contains enough earworms to keep the song going on its own for a day or two. Grace Ha’s voice dominates the melodic yet noisy guitars, whilst the song itself is full of confidence and excitement. And if you have not understood the gist, it’s very good indeed.

  1. So I just checked and realized I did hear about Bridge Dog thanks to you ! They have released a few singles since “Counterweight” and the new one, “Standard Issue” is another killer. Thank you again for these amazing playlists. Cheers from BE !

  2. Agreed. Their songs since have been great. One was definitely in the last mix and the latest will feature next month.
