Sullen Eyes hail from Bangor, Maine and consist of Julia S (Vocals), Colby K (drums) and Ryan S (Guitar). There is a reference on their Instagram page of a release called Hardwood Floors and a Handhold To Hold. Given there are no tracks of that name here it means that it’s a) an earlier demo I have missed or 2) the previous working title of this self-titled EP.
Drawing their inspiration from Sarah Records (well they took their name after a Sea Urchins track) and the early Slumberland bands Sullen Eyes provide four short self-penned twee-pop tracks that literally jangle all the way. The vocals, especially on the standout track Take Our Time, are a considerable factor in defining their retro sound. There is a fifth track too being a cover of The La’s There She Goes which should even put a smile on Lee Mavers’ face. Actually probably not whilst thinking about it but it works for me. Lovely music for these miserable times.
Sullen Eyes is an essential listen for any fan of “C86” inspired music. You can get it from here.
